ARTIST’S STATEMENT
At the beginning of the twentieth century there was a growing dissatisfaction with the photographic establishment. These photo-secessionists rejected trivial detail and employed special printing processes and compositions that lessened the detail of the finished print and highlighted the art of the picture. Critics decried the manipulation of pictures—the hand of the artist obscuring the eye of the artist—preferring to let the process of the eye and the composition show exactly what is present.
Now, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, the vast majority of photographs are heavily manipulated through the use of computers. I am exploring the ways that the hand can once again express the vision of the artist in ways that strict adherence to the most current technology obscures—to tame the computer into being a tool.
I am a master of computers and digital imaging, but choose to reject their behavior in favor of minimal equipment and chemistry that was available at the dawn of the industrial age. Several of the cameras that I use have no glass or plastic, including lenses. Less technology frees me to use the tool that I use best—my creativity.
